Re: taging special characters

Trying to make sure I am tagging correctly, I have some releases from the Artist μ‐Ziq and Picard wants to rename them to Mu‐Ziq.

Which one is the correct name for this artist? I prefer μ‐Ziq as that is the name the Artist chose but it seems as though that has been changed to Mu‐Ziq purely for convenience?

To complicate things further I use Lyrion (LMS) to play my music around the house and while LMS can find the Artist, μ‐Ziq (the folder containing a release), LMS fails to display the release that exists in that folder.

What is going on here?

It looks like the artist name is using the Greek “μ” character in MB (assuming this is the artist in question: μ‐Ziq - MusicBrainz)

They do have a sort name of the “Mu-Ziq”, which helps folks find this artist without having to look up the non-Latin character.

However, the most likely scenario is that the artist doesn’t consistently use the Greek artist credit across releases. To avoid this, and to keep Album Artist credits consistent across albums of the same artist, you’ll want to ensure you have “Use standardized artist names” enabled in Picard’s settings panel.

Settings → Metadata

If that is already checked, you may have a script or plugin enabled that is overriding this setting.

Edit note: Clarified what causes variances between releases of the same artist.

It sounds like the nonstandard character ‘μ’ might create a lot of problems for different systems. To hazard a guess, that’s probably why Picard uses ‘Mu‐Ziq’ for folder names.

It’s possibly safe to leave ‘μ‐Ziq’ in the metadata tags? Compared to folder and file names. But you’d have to test with your player/s.
