Picard cover art itunes and wmp

hello! so I have a confusing issue:
I tag files with picard and the coverart shows fine in the folder on windows 11.
but when I load files tagged with picard into itunes 6 it does not show coverart, nor can I seem to save any images to those files (but I could before, and sometimes they had images before)
now I tried legacy wmp and it did how images, but with some finangering, the coverart can be (re)added and now it shows in itunes too. this is not a cache issue because I’ve refreshed and retried.
notably, before I tag files with Picard, I can add an artwork to it with itunes.
and then it sticks, but if I tag with picard after this the files are “removed” from itunes

infact it seems just loading the files in wmp and closing will update something that let’s itunes see the artwork?
has anyone seen anything like this or experienced something like this?

One problem with iTunes is it does not like updating metadata of files once they are in iTunes. It assumes the only changes you will ever do is by using iTunes. So you may need to remove the album from iTunes, move it out of sight of iTunes, delete it from iTunes. And then reintroduce it.

Also how are you adding your artwork? Embedded? cover.jpg? folder.jpg? Those old apps like iTunes\WMP are fussy things. They also get extra confused if you have PNG files, too large images or things like that.
