Picard 3 beta 7

We have some interesting new features and lots of bugfixes in the new Picard 3 beta 7. See the blog post:

We are keeping up with monthly beta releases, despite vacation season. Expect another beta in (likely late) August, then we’ll try to wrap things up and get ready for the final release.

Hi @outsidecontext. I’ve been away from MusicBrainz Picard for a while, and these beta releases seem like a good occasion to discuss this:

Since MacOS is due to update in the fall, is there any concern with the warnings it throws up these days when you launch older apps like Picard, noting that Intel support will be going away? I wouldn’t want to jump to MacOS 27 with my Silicon/ARM Mac and lose Picard.

Of course, I see your link to the betas above does include a Mac ARM version, which is great.

That said, I understand it’s technically not just the apps themselves that need to be updated, but other elements like plugins, which of course can apply to Picard and its community.

One quote I can find: “macOS Tahoe 26 is the last release to support Intel‑based Macs and Rosetta support for apps will end after macOS 27”

So where does Picard 3 stand in terms of this, given that there’s only one more MacOS version that will (at least through Rosetta) support a lot of these older apps and their plugins? If you are moving to ARM for the MacOS version, are plugins also in need of updates?

Thanks

edit - Here’s a short explanation of the same situation with the Capture One photo software: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/36001573648157-macOS-Support-Ending-for-Intel-Based-Apps-warning

“To address the warning, review any third‑party plugins or external tools used with Capture One and update them to Apple‑silicon‑compatible versions where available. If updates are not available, temporarily disabling those plugins will typically stop the warning from appearing.”

I’d hope there is a solution other than simply not using some of the more important plugins for Picard.

I don’t think you need to worry about plugins. Picard plugins are not compiled specific to an OS. They are scripts that exist the same on Windows, MacOS and Linux. Just text scripts that are read and executed on demand.

As long as the main app is ARM compiled then you will be fine. This is why trying the Beta out will be a good reassurance for you as it should not trigger any Apple Intel warnings.

Thanks for that Ivan. I get it.

As for Picard 3, can it be installed at this stage alongside the current version without issue, so you can run them independently and see the little differences?

On Windows we can install it as a portable version. Otherwise it will interfere. Not sure of the case with a Mac as I don’t see portable as an option.

Got it thanks for the intel Ivan.
