Hi all, since last week I worked with zas to fork and fix the GitHub Action we use to manage our DNS records now (action wasn’t being maintained upstream and needed to be updated), and I also made some inroads on the SSO project. Hopefully will be reaching out to the tester group on that this week!

Last week I merged a couple of userscript PRs for some of ROpedebee’s scripts.
I started with the Harmony integration of the cover art uploader which YoMo12 provided before I reviewed a couple of other PRs.
And since I was already looking at it, I finished the Harmony integration to seed release URLs instead of just the front cover URL and made it display the image sizes as well.
Both changes have been released today, that was one of the most wanted features which people were missing form a-tisket.
(And most never realized that it is actually that userscript which is doing the magic.)
That’s it, I am currently creating release lookup tests for the Tidal v1 API provider from cached data

last week I did code reviews of zas’ refactorings for Picard. Also checking some tickets and bugfixes
I also did experiment with and actually implement Picard browser integration using a custom protocol. Trigger for this was latest Safari releases on macOS preventing the existing browser integration links to load
It’s generally working, but brings its own issues. Very platform dependent, and debugging platform specific issues is already very time consuming

I got over with my midsem exams
and worked on feedback from monkey for a ticket (feature to hide brainzplayer on web)
also, tested the thanks feature a bit on prod

last week, i worked on speeding up statistics dumps which went very well. down from 24 hours to 30 mins. also fixed migrated rest of dumps to zstd for speedup.
upgraded the spark cluster, ansible scripts for the same seem to be working quite well (does ~95% of the job).

[mayhem] last week was some gsoc work, some MeB stuff, but mostly working on the new MBID mapper.
its gone from fast fuzzy lookup to a full new MBID mapping server, lol.
it looks very promising, but I keep hitting road-blocks that cause me to have to re-write bits constantly.
and I just hit yet another one of those snags. supper annoying.
but overall the project is a lot of fun. : )

I spent most of my time this week looking into duplicates in series and how to avoid them, plus making a report for when avoiding them is hard
Other than that, the usual (some small tickets, some code review, some banning, etc).
And some enjoying of the sun since we got the two days of summer early this year

last week I made some more progress on the MBS github-actions branch, tests were passing but I’m still working out the best way to cache the huge Docker images between jobs and builds
also worked on MBS-13959, did some code review, and misc. work on other PRs

over the weekend I also worked on MBS-4501, still implementing the tricky edit classes and writing tests for those. I’m focusing on getting something basic working that people can test, and then improve it later (but basic isn’t easy either)

[monkey] Last week I worked with Ansh on the LB mobile player UI (which is looking great!) and on migrating LB to Bootstrap 4 (in preparation for v5…).
I also deployed the new LB feed feature to thank users for recommendations, nice work suvid !
On BookBrainz I looked into the ORM automatic deployments through GH actions, which aren’t quite working, requiring manually pushing new versions of the package. Not quite finished on that front but made some good progress.
Also gave a hand to jasje with cleaning up and organizing jira tickets for the mobile apps projects, particularly having easily accessible good-first-bug tickets, 'tis the season.
I finished reviewing and merging the last of kellnerd’s GSOC project PRs, much late. Great work kellnerd !
And a lot of other PR reviews on both projects.

Last week, I continued to work on the dnscontrol move, set up the initial configuration, fixed and improved the Github actions, everything is working now, now I’ll transfer a domain from Gandi to Porkbun to ensure the process goes smoothly.
Apart that, I worked on some Picard code refactoring, as well as PR reviews
Also I noticed we have abnormal traffic on beta.mb since few days, I started to filter out some, but more work to do on this front tomorrow
Today I reinstalled Spark machines, they now run on 24.04
plus usual supervision, sys upgrades, user support, etc.

AI in GSoC

[mayhem] ok, so last year we had an issue where a student used AI and then wasn’t honest about it.
we didn’t have a policy for this, and amazingly neither does Google.
so, its about time we come up with a policy! The mentors discussed (and approved) this policy statement about AI in GSoC:

We discourage the use of AI tools in communications and contributions. The goal of GSoC is for you to learn and improve your skills, not just to finish your project at any cost. However, if you do use any AI or LLMs, you must disclose their use in your PRs and/or chat. Additionally, you must fully understand and be able to explain any AI-generated code you submit. Any undisclosed use of AI or Large Language Models, or inability to explain AI-generated contributions, will be grounds for instant disqualification.
