Need guidance - retrieve artist track and original release date

New to MusicBrainz. Looking for most efficient way to obtain original release date for an artist song. Went thru the online documentation pretty closely. I’m able to retrieve a release date but clearly not the original (e.g. 1974 Bruce Springsteen track “Rosalie” comes back as 2008). I suspect I’m picking up date of a compilation released in 2008. Any guidance much appreciated.

There are the originaldate and originalyear tags (see Picard’s tag mappings), but those tags rely on the earliest release from the same release group. If you are tagging a compilation, I’m afraid you have to set these tags manually.

I’ve been keeping an eye on a plugin to do this in Picard, but apparently they haven’t gotten it working yet.
