MetaBrainz Community Meeting

Kia ora koutou! Hello all!

For quite a while now (about a year) we have been holding unofficial informal community meetings over on the MetaBrainz Discord, after the dev meetings.

The meetings have been very enjoyable, with a modest range of maybe 3-10 attendees (depending on the weather, or something) hanging out for an hour of sharing what they’ve been working on or editing, and talking nerd and music guff. It’s a mix of people in the text chat, on voice chat, and a couple on video or sharing their screens - any level of interaction is welcome.

And before you pick up the pitchfork, please - we are aware that Discord is a walled garden. It was simply the easiest way to see if there is community interest in a meeting where video and voice chat is possible. If anyone wants to suggest (or even better, host) a better and more open (e.g. not Zoom) meeting setup where people can easily join a video chat, that’s certainly the next step.

Anyway, this thread is mainly to invite you to the community meeting! If we get more attendees, or interest, then we can also more seriously look at changing platforms (no point setting up something fancy to host empty meetings).

The community meeting is every Monday, currently three hours after the dev meeting. Enter your location [here] to check your local meeting time.

Timing can be changed if a majority of attendees prefer a different time, but please note that this time was already frankensteined around a few schedules.

Why are we unofficial ? :(

Although, apparently Stoat as a great voice chat option, and is open source, and text bridges toward discord/matrix exists (jersey/lightning: a cross-platform chat bot connecting your communities - Codeberg.org). Would be neet to have VoIP bridging tho

Purely because it’s on a closed channel. Maybe I should have stuck with just ‘informal’?

But really, anything important should be discussed on a bridged channel or the forums. Not that we discuss world-changing events in the meetings, anyway…

To me it’s just informal. If it was unofficial it wouldn’t have a discord event, nor have any metabrainz members in it.

But yeah, it’s not really important, but I wouldn’t mind it getting outside the channel as well. There’s some great tools getting showcased, interesting style questions, as well as neat discussion that could be great to have more eyes one / fork into their own threads.

The thing is that no one is really popping in the channel to see what got showcased. It’s “You’re there, or you’re not”.
