Is a 2xCD with remixed + original a new release or new release group?

I recently got this CD: Amazon - Thousand Foot Krutch - The End Is Where We Begin Reignited. This is a 2xCD release where disc 1 is the remixed version of the album and disc 2 is the original album.

This CD had digital releases without the original album (released before the CD):

When the digital versions were released, someone added a release group for the remixed version: Release group “The End Is Where We Begin (Reignited)” by Thousand Foot Krutch - MusicBrainz

Now that I have the 2xCD, I want to create a release for it so I can correctly tag it in Picard. There are 3 options I see:

For what it’s worth, this album is similar in that it has its remixed tracks first and then the original album on “disc 2” (it’s a digital media release): https://musicbrainz.org/release/07155912-50e7-4380-afe1-2fb5cc99cf15. I’m sure there are other examples out there as well.

Not really sure what the best way to go about this is. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I’m not sure to understand all the post.
But it seems there is an original album RG, then a remixed album RG.

Now you got a later release that includes both these 2 contents.

So yes, it is a new compilation RG with includes relationship towards the 2 older RG.
And you should reuse the same existing recordings, if they are indeed the same.

I’ve handled a similar situation with three release groups (tho in my case, it’s a studio album and a live album, one of which was previously released)

I added this release and release group: Release “The End Is Where We Begin (Reignited)” by Thousand Foot Krutch - MusicBrainz

The only downside to this is that Picard picks up the original release date as 2024-11-08 for all tracks, including disc 2 (the original album).

I guess there’s no way around that unless I were to use one of the existing release groups?

it should pick up track release dates all the tracks on the albums (provided you used the same recordings). I do feel like that might be a good feature to have in Picard tho…

Yeah. I think what Picard is doing right now is looking at the release group the release is under, and seeing that the only release in that release group is from 2024. Picard doesn’t seem to care that the actual recordings are first featured on releases from the original release group.

I guess it makes some amount of sense. An entirely new release group containing all the tracks off of another release group isn’t something that happens very often.

I’m not too caught up on this. I think the metadata I added is good enough for my needs.

EDIT: I decided to change the release group of the release I added to the one that already existed for the remix album. I don’t think this makes sense as a compilation, and it really should be in the same release group as the originally released remix album

There’s a way to make Picard find the first release date for a recording rather than the first release release date, it’s just a script:

$set(originaldate,$if2(%_recording_firstreleasedate%,%originaldate%))
