Incorrect Stats

Hello,

It appears my ListenBrainz stats may have been incorrectly generated recently. Songs that I heard not last week as my top of that week. My top songs of “This Month” suddenly shifted a whole lot after the month turned, and “This Month” became “Last Month.” It looked a lot more like January instead. Not sure what could be going on here. Maybe a confusion between February and January?

Thank you for your time,
Whimsical6

Edit: It appears the stats have updated. Last month’s stats now better match what I would expect of February, rather than resemble January.

Thanks, whoever worked on this mysterious (to me) issue. I’m curious as to what happened, but also glad it got solved!

It appears this issue has come back, where the statistics for “Last Month” remind me more of the month before it. Not sure if it is a delay of some sorts. I know it can take a bit sometimes to update. But a week is quite a while, which leads me to believe it might not be the usual “delay”.

I can kinda work out the statistics by using the local alistral database on my machine (or I guess I could also use the ListenBrainz API). Which seems to confirm that the stats are indeed not representative of the previous month’s listening stats.

Edit: the “How and when are statistics calculated?” popup says “if you encounter an issue please contact us.” Perhaps I should try that, rather than posting on the forums

Sometimes a process gets stuck and doesn’t update/run properly - I suspect this is usually what happens, and then everything is ‘fixed’ in the next stat run. We had a process get stuck again recently, which may have caused this.

@lucifer will be able to confirm.

My stats have been incorrect lately as well. It’s including artists I didn’t listen to during that time period, and it appears to be over-counting some scrobbles.

As an example, it says I listened to Bellini 30 times last week, when in reality it was only 10. The previous week it said I listened to Bellini 20 times, when I didn’t listen to them at all that week.

When are these stat runs? Halfway through the month and the stats don’t seem to have been updated.

Also, can’t these stuck processes be detected, and trigger a rerun?

Did you check if your listens show up repeatedly on the Listens tab? I’ve done that a few times, and spotted some incorrect listens, which I’ve manually deleted.

If you use Spotify, I’ve noticed some of their features can trigger listens that didn’t really happen, such as previewing playlists or the more recent mixing feature (they play a snippet of the song, and I guess that ends up counting). Especially on the mixing feature thing, as the snippet replays whenever you make a change. I’ve had listens upon listens of the same song within just a few minutes

I myself have recently fell for it like a fool once again, previewing some playlists to try to find a familiar tune (no luck yet). Then I noticed several of the songs on the playlists, back to back on my Listens tab, which I had to manually delete (then I mistakenly deleted a whole album’s listens mistaking it for previews I later made of it)

See this related post of mine:

This doc has the data update intervals: ListenBrainz Data Update Intervals — ListenBrainz 0.1.0 documentation

If something is missing let me know and I’ll see if I can get it added.

AFAIK some work was done on detecting stuck processes but things still seem to be unreliable. This is another that @lucifer would have to answer

My recent listens are showing up correctly, with no extras. The extras only show up as numbers in the stats. There are at least two artists listed in last week’s stats that don’t appear anywhere in the recent listens for those days.

So the stats update daily. Then I suppose whatever issue is causing the incorrect stats for the previous month is still around, seeing as the stats still look the same.

I did, however, work out what some of them ought to be, through Alistral’s local database on my system (though 3 songs would share the fifth (#5) spot through same amount of listens (supposedly, if I got my query right). Idk how ListenBrainz chooses top spot positions when in a tie like this)

Well, tbh my “Last Week” stats also look a bit off. I haven’t checked the listens themselves, but the stats don’t feel like “Last Week.” Some songs look more recent, but others feel unfitting for the time frame. So maybe, idk, it could be considering a wider time span? I don’t know what’s going on exactly here, just theories.

Okay, seems to be fixed now. Or at least stats looks more believable
