anyone else seen this news?
So, 75M tracks removed within a year, against 40M currently in MB (and not all, just spammy ones)
Thats some level for sure. Probably the same thing happens with written word.
it’s really depending on the marketplace/platform - if Amazon don’t have a care then they’ll continue to host AI content.
All I ask really is that these platforms make it obvious when AI has been used, then let the audience decide
Boy George got kicked off Bandcamp due to AI generated song.
Beatport bans all AI-generated tracks from platform

It seems every major online store is at least trying to label AI made recordings
So, he is good ~2M. Amazing.
Smith robbed millions in royalty payments from genuine artists and their fans
This is clearly false - his bots generated music, and his bots uploaded it and listened it. He scammed platforms.
Still it was money that would have gone to other artists, as Spotify and others distribute a part of their revenue to artists/labels based on share of listens (and some intransparent agreements with the major labels).
I don’t think that your conclusion is necessarily correct.
Yes, fake streams can dilute the royalty pool if they are counted as real streams. But it does not mean that the money from those streams would simply have gone to other artists.
Spotify itself explains that there is no fixed payment per stream. Royalties are based on each artist’s share of total streams (“streamshare”), not on a fixed amount per stream:
Spotify’s explanation of its royalty system
So you cannot simply say: “These 10 million fake streams stole X dollars from other artists.”
More importantly, Spotify says that when it detects artificial streams, those streams do not earn royalties. Spotify also says it tries to prevent them from having a negative second-order effect on legitimate streams:
Spotify’s explanation of artificial streaming
So I agree that manipulating streams is fraud and can distort the system. But saying that the money generated by the fake streams “would have gone to other artists” is an oversimplification. That would only be true if the fake streams were actually counted for royalty purposes and affected the distribution of the royalty pool.
According to the article the fraudster did get royalties payment for the streams (actually that was the point of doing it). And as I understand Spotifys payment there is a fixed amount of royalties being payed in total. If someone takes a certain percentage of that, others get less.
For the record: According to this online article
“In this case, it appears that our preventative measures worked and limited the royalties Michael Smith was able to generate from Spotify to approximately $60,000 of the $10’000’000 noted in the indictment. As Spotify typically accounts for around 50% of streamshare, this shows how effective we are at limiting the impact of artificial streaming on our platform.”
Pointing out Spotify’s reported market share is not intended to excuse or minimise the fraudster’s wrongdoing, nor does it make the fraud any less serious.
Don’t hurt Claude’s feelings:
Unless you have good reason, lol. Totally not for interpretation… ![]()
But I support it. Extreme negativity toward other (life) forms does nobody any good. Just go to the gym and go nuts.
How can AI generate without pre-existing music by real artists to base on (steal)?
I hope that soon AI music distributing in exchange of incomes itself can be considered as stealing fraud, too.
How can people create without pre-existing music by other artists to base on (steal)?
The anti AI hype is simply ridiculous at this point. Besides, AI didn’t decide on its own to do this, human did.
Sorry but if I know a beautiful voice is made by AI, I’m very disappointed and sorry for the real singers and sorry for the music and the humanity in general.
It’s why I don’t listen to music produced recently.
Around me there is no anti-AI hype at all, it’s the total opposite, completely.
