How to deal with copy controlled CDs (and understanding error correction in EAC)?

As aerozol says try Burst mode, and if it gets through that then run it through CUETools as that can usually recover bad rips (within reason) - assuming other people have managed to rip it!

In fact it went through (after almost 5 hours). What are the exact steps with CUETools I should go through? As of now I do have uncompressed (wav) files…

Download the CUETools 2.1.7 experimental/dev build, I’ve been using it for ages and it won’t bring a load of old .NET framework dependencies with it.
Just unzip it, run CUETools.exe and use the folder browser to locate your files, select Verify from the Action section and click Go.
It’ll generate an AccurateRip report, and if it finds a match but states that it’s not accurate you can try to fix the encode (depending on how bad it is) by selecting ‘Encode, repair’ from the Action section.

Oh, and remove the file called user_profiles_enabled so that settings will be saved to the same folder instead of your user profile folder.

I think there’s no match and I can throw the CD away…

I was asked to choose between 3 different options: one had 1160 confidence, the other had 31 and the last 1. So I chose 1160 - is this the way to go?

You’ll have to forgive me as it’s been a while, but a high level summary is:
CTDB matches ignore certain sectors around track boundaries so DON’T match individual pressings but do give you some confidence about the quality of a rip (you’re more likely to get matches to CTDB than you are AccurateRip).
AccurateRip matches the entire CD (apart from 5 frames at the beginning of track 1 and 5 frames at the end of the last track), so will distinguish between different pressings of a CD even if only the pre-gaps between tracks vary. From memory there was a problem with the old version of AccurateRip (v1) which is why in the log you see two figures:
01 [63d91daf|75f69e20] (000+000/203) No match
It equates to:
Track number [ARv1 CRC | ARv2 CRC] (ARv1 matches + ARv2 matches / Total results)

For offset 0 both versions are tested, but where the offset is greater than 0 only ARv1 is tested I believe. If CTDB shows matches but you don’t have any AccurateRip matches, and there are multiple results for different offsets, it’s worth performing another verify and changing the Offset in the Extra section to match those from the initial run (that used an offset of 0) if the results from those offsets all show ‘No match (V2 was not tested)’, because it means that the track start position is correct, but that it doesn’t match with ARv1 (hence possible match with ARv2).

From your logs

The first one (0H8sn0HH5iuo7TMwHJ68hTIsCUM-) I’d say yes, you can throw that one away, it neither matches with CTDB or AccurateRip.

Art of Noise looks like it needs to be repaired because of track 2 (use the 545 match to repair), at which point it will hopefully also match with AccurateRip (with the offset of -480). Once it’s corrected you could also try another verify with a -480 offset to see if you get any additional ARv2 matches.

It could be that the match with Kelis (QO3JAn60M23uWTzy8ohaN9p.f6g-) on CTDB is your own (I’d have to look into how and when they accept rips)? It might be worth retrying a verify with offsets -664, -614 and 32 to see if you have any ARv2 matches.

Yes you’ve corrected Marillion. When it prompts you with options for correction you want to pick the number that most closely represents the matches you’ve had for the other tracks. Whilst choosing any one of the suggestions will result in a positive match within the CTDB section, what you’re trying to do is pick a track correction for the same pressing as the other tracks, which should result in AccurateRip matches too.

Hope that makes sense?

Hi!

OK - thanks for confirming.

I’ve repaired Art of Noise and to my ears it sounds ok. Should I really verify it again afterwards?

OK, I’ll have it a go tomorrow.

Great!

The first part, more technical, will for sure make sense when I’ll have more knowledge about the topics mentioned… thanks for trying to explain it to me either way!

Listening to a CD may alert you to any major problems, but it’s time consuming and won’t alert you to the smaller digital inaccuracies.

Verifying is a non destructive action so there’s no harm in running it multiple times. The only reason I suggested running it with a -480 was to see if it would match some ARv2 rips, and thus give you more confidence that it’s an accurate rip. With an accuracy of 1, as long as it wasn’t your submission (EAC prompts you to submit so you should be aware of this), and as long as you didn’t buy it second hand (becase the other person could have submitted it), it’s still likely accurate (especially given the low number of submissions present for that release), but I still like to get as many matches as possible.

One last thing, I know it’s a small sample I’ve seen but none have AR matches with a zero offset, how did you perform these rips? I use EAC and there’s a process to make sure it’s ripping accurately.
There are many EAC Guides but here’s a decent one. I rip to an uncompressed Image with CUE sheet (Alt+F7) and use CUETools to then split it out to FLAC tracks, just because I think it’s easier on the drive but YMMV.

Essentially you want to verify EAC’s configuration with a “key disc”. They used to maintain a list of key discs but nowadays if you pop a relatively popular disc in, and it recognises it as a key disc it’ll prompt you to perform a test (if you haven’t done so already).

In the early days when copy protected cd’s showed up I recall using CloneCD for those, and that worked well.
But it also may have to do with the drive you are using. If you have a very old one available that you can plug into your pc it could also help.

So I used CUETools (2.1.6) to “Encode, repair”. After this step, I did “Verify” on the FLAC files generated. Here’s the output:

The first time I ran EAC, it tested the drive with a CD I had inserted… don’t remember which one it was.
I started the wizard again and used one of the key discs.
I got this:
image
Now, about the C2 error information settings: I don’t really have “bad CDs” with scratches. I used the “Art of Noise” CD and it detected C2 error. Therefore I enabled C2 error detection. But I found this in the guide you linked:

So what’s your suggestion here? Leaveing C2 error correction dis- or enabled?

I just did not find the “Configure AccurateRip” part - where is this hidden?

To your main question about how I do ripping: I insert the CD, I press F5 (uncompressed WAV) and let it EAC extract single tracks. Then I pass it over to CUETools to generate FLAC (but TBH I’d prefer just to use only EAC for ripping and FLAC generation).

Looks like Art of Noise has been repaired successfully.

I’d leave it with whatever was detected, but if you continue to rip discs that don’t verify then maybe deselect it. Given you’ve said your discs are clean it shouldn’t matter anyway.

If you look under EAC > Drive Options > Offset/Speed do you already have a read sample offset correction? If you selected ‘Use AccurateRip with this drive’ and it recognised the drive you should have an offset and it’ll be greyed out. If you want to run a manual configuration, deselect ‘Use AccurateRip’, make sure ‘Use read sample offset correction’ is selected and click 'Detect read sample offset correction. This is where you’ll have to make sure that a key disc is inserted (it will tell you if there isn’t).
Having said that I just tried it myself using a disc I’ve kept for just this purpose and it said ‘CD Not Found in Offset Database’, so maybe this has been deprecated.

The only reason I don’t like doing it all in EAC is because as the drive spins up reading the CD, it has to stop at the end of every track to perform the conversion, which I don’t like.

As long as they verify you can do whatever you want

Thank you for some very useful lessons here with CUETOOLs.

And I love the fact that this is all happening with The Art of Noise.

Thanks from my side as well, @simbun !

Something more…
I’ve just ripped another CD and one track got issues:

Track 5

Filename C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\FLAC\Londonbeat\In the Blood\05 Step Inside My Shoes.wav

 Suspicious position 0:02:49 - 0:02:51

 Peak level 100.0 %
 Extraction speed 0.2 X
 Track quality 98.7 %
 Copy CRC 1262DBC3
Cannot be verified as accurate (confidence 154) [71BBA121], AccurateRip returned [4CA96EE5] (AR v2)
 Copy finished

So, as it is already converted to FLAC and the original WAV file has been automatically deleted (I know I could change this option): does it matter if I apply the correction with CUETools on FLAC file, or would it be better to apply to the WAV one?
I am unsure because if I now want to correct the FLAC file, I need to select an audio output again (lossless, flac), but will this impact the FLAC file quality?

All lossless conversion is, lossless (if done properly)
