I have the Japanese version of System of a Down’s “Toxicity” album, but Aerials and Arto are separate files. How can I organize this in Picard? It’s picking up the US release instead.
Just to clarify:
- Do you have a CD, download or something else?
- Have you split the track into 2 separate files yourself or is that how it’s showing up in Picard?
Hello, @spartanhooah , and welcome to MusicBrainz!
I count 49 different releases named “Toxicity” from System of a Down (artist/cc0b). To make things clearer for those of us who don’t follow System of a Down that closely, it would help if you could give the MBID or URL of the Release you want to use (perhaps release/ff89?), and of the US Release which you get instead (perhaps release/1bea?).
By the way, none of the three Releases of Toxicity from Japan which I can find have separate tracks for Aerials and Arto. They each have a single track, which is named “Aerials” and is a performance of the song “Arto”. However, the US vinyl release/6b78 does have those tracks separated. Might your digital music files be transcribed from that LP?
If you want to use a different release from the same release group then the easiest way is using “Other versions” in the context menu of a release.
But you can always load any release you find on MusicBrainz into Picard. There are several ways to do so. E.g. you can use “Lookup in browser” in Picard, then search the release on the website and use the green “tagger” button to load the release into Picard. Or you can use the searchbox in Picard, either for searching or by directly entering the release URL or MBID.
Have a look at the documentation: Retrieving Album Information — MusicBrainz Picard v2.13.3 documentation
Apologies for the late reply; I didn’t realize this forum didn’t send emails by default.

- I have a burnt CD that I either got from a friend years ago or I made myself from Napster or similar.
- The track was already split before I did anything in Picard. I think it was probably that way on the CD.
As for which release I “want”, I guess I’m not really sure. Whichever one fits the closest with the tracks I have. I also don’t really understand the consequences of a release not matching the files 100%. Most of the tracks match to this US release, but that one doesn’t have the track “Johnny”, which Picard thinks comes from this Japanese release. Then there’s this European release that has Aerials and Arto separated, but it doesn’t have Johnny.
Have a check over at discogs see if this combination actually exists. But it is also possible you made a custom disk. I know I’ve done this for mates before where I make custom “deluxe” releases by adding tracks of an EP to the end of an Album. In those cases there is never going to be a MusicBrainz match.
I don’t care enough to go through all 84 releases (and that’s just the CD format!) at Discogs. It probably is custom in some fashion. So what’s the thing to do with Picard in these instances? Just ignore the album pane?
It depends what else you plan to do with the data. If you want another program like KODI\PLEX to use the tag data it may be an idea to remove the Release MBID so it does not look up the wrong release. You’ll also need to manually correct the track numbers.
Ok, that makes sense. thanks for the information.
