Hi, everyone. Bit of a long post ahead, sorry in advance.
I looked around a bit and wasn’t able to find anything that fit what I’m trying to do exactly, though if there is, I wouldn’t mind being pointed to it.
Gobble Gobble made some remixes and eventually released them together under the name of Gobbl’d Volume 1… or so I think?
Among other issues, the cover seems to contain no actual information about who or what is on the album (and that includes a title), but the actual folder the digital version is contained in calls it just “GOBBL’d Volume 1”, so I think that’s what should be put in, just with proper capitalization.
As for each of the songs, all 8 of them are from different artists, and they’re all remixed by Gobble Gobble. It’s also unclear which, if any, of the remixes could be considered “official”. (Remix album documentation mentions that things like official remix albums should be credited to the artist of the original work, but more unofficial remixes should go to the remixer:) So should it be credited to Gobble Gobble or Various Artists?
Additionally, each file in the digital version is named in away that makes this a little confusing for me, examples below:
A remix of Baby It’s You by Sean Nicholas Savage named exactly “Sean Savage - Baby It’s You (GOBBLE GOBBLE’s Pop Manslaughter)”
A remix of Morgan by Cloud Nothings named exactly “Cloud Nothings - Morgan (GOBBLE GOBBLE’s Nimbus Shamble)”
Aside from these two note that there’s two others with underscores instead of spaces, so should the underscores be kept for those two, or is it possible those weren’t intended as part of the title?
It doesn’t help I have very little information about this digital release, since instead of going through a label or something like Bandcamp, it was put up for download on Mediafire by Gobble Gobble.
I just wanted to ask these questions beforehand to avoid adding a release with incorrect information, or simply omitting a majority of information due to uncertainty, or debate about it in the edit notes of the release where it might not be seen by someone else having a similar problem. Any help would be appreciated, and I would be happy to provide additional information or clarification if it’s needed.
I think the Official vs Unofficial part is more asking which artist did the releasing. this sounds like a Gobble Gobble release to me
given those two examples, I’d probably move the artist name to the artist field, leaving everything else as is. i.e. Morgan (GOBBLE GOBBLE’s Nimbus Shamble) as the track title and Cloud Nothings as the track artist
for the underscores, I don’t know… if these tracks were released elsewhere and have the same title stylization, I’d leave them as is, but if there’s not, I dunno… I could see an argument to be made for keeping them as is or for error correction (there’s a lot of ways for a filename to get spaces replaced with underscores)
if there’s already metadata in the files, you might consider looking at that
Thank you both for your replies! I’m glad I’ve got at least one person to help, let alone two.
I saw that Discogs release page. Unfortunately, it has some incorrect information. It credits Sean Savage for Baby It’s You, which is indeed how it’s listed in the song title and files, but that’s the wrong artist. Baby It’s You is by Sean Nicholas Savage, a different person altogether, and it was just shortened by dropping the middle name. When I initially saw that, I felt unsure of using it as a basis and thought to ask other MusicBrainz users instead. Also, it shows what might be an error in one of the titles. “Pen to the Paper (GOBBLE GOBBLE’s Buzzbin Rubdown”. Note the lack of a closing parenthesis, something which does match the filename and the title in the metadata, but does not match the style of the other 7 tracks on this album, nor any of the other remixes released by Gobble Gobble (as there were more after these 8), and it doesn’t match the original title on Gobble Gobble’s Bandcamp. I was able to find it archived on the Wayback Machine, and this track is listed with a closing parenthesis there: https://web.archive.org/web/20101204131858/http://gobblegbl.bandcamp.com/track/pen-to-the-paper-gobble-gobbles-buzzbin-rubdown
That was a good idea, so I went ahead and got a fresh download to make sure there wasn’t any metadata I added in, and those two tracks do not have the underscores in the “Title” field of the metadata, so it seems it was just filename weirdness. I was also able to find the original Bandcamp listings through the Wayback Machine with more searching, and the underscores aren’t there either.
Regardless, as I was looking through the remixes to find out more about the originals, I noticed that one original track has a featured artist. The remix of Tide Came In by Bike Month does not credit “Jessica Jalbert”, though they are credited in the original song as a “feature” as can be seen on Bandcamp (Tide Came In ft. Jessica Jalbert | Bike Month). As Jessica Jalbert was the singer on this song and can still be heard in the remix, should I also include that feature here despite that credit being omitted from the remixes?
