Global listen counts do not add up

i am very pleased that the listen counts work now.
but i have a question about that.

if i check a local band steve to their listen counts it all works out

i am the only listener, they only have a few songs…
52+50+22 = 124
so that is all fine

but if i then check queens of the stone age i get a totally different thing

the total playcount of the band is 972.000.
but there are songs that have been played 1.800.000 times.

how does that math works? or is there something that i am missing?

Its possible some recordings are present on multiple releases and the recording count shown is the sum across all releases. So its possible for the recording count to be more than the releases’ play count. But I’ll have to investigate more to check if its this or a bug in this case.

I posted about this time ago on discord, so will copy it here. Maybe helpful for investigating

Was this ever figured out? Why some don’t add up? Top song 49k listens, but overall for the artist only 5.4k  I mostly see it with older KPop groups. So I went through the kpop group collection by begin date and it seems to be around 2012 area that it starts happening. I couldn’t find any 2013 or later with the issue, and almost all early 2012 and earlier had it. So some how it’s date related. What happened in 2012? https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/LB-1407 I think is about this, but that is closed. Not sure what the right thing to do is, open a new ticket? Comment on existing?

Something that happened in 2012 seems to cause it?

my first son was born in 2012… what kind of monster did i put on this earth?
