Find artists by IPI

If you have an IPI code, is there any way to figure out what artist it belongs to?

When adding some ISWCs and other work IDs to the database, I came across a few releases on the BMI website with an unknown writer with the IPI “00396710530”. This doesn’t seem to be a generic code for unknown artist, since searching the BMI database, several releases have an unknown writer while only some of those use that IPI, and it doesn’t match the IPI on the MB [unknown] artist page. Though I suppose it’s possible there are multiple IPIs for an unknown artist, presumably with some pattern as to where one is used over the other.

I tried searching through ISWCnet, and didn’t find a result, some of the releases on BMI are lacking an ISWC, while at least one has one, but is lacking that unknown artist on ISWCnet.

If it’s not already on MB, then only the things you seem to have already done.

Only ISWCnet allows a search on the IPI as far as I know. Could IPI 00396710530 be the “unknown writer” placeholder?

That seems to be it, odd that there are multiple placeholders for unknown writer ː/
