If a release says “Distributed by X label in the USA, Distributed by Y label in Canada”, for instance, would that mean there should be release events for each country mentioned on said release?

Yes, two dates, two countries, as it shows it was available in both countries. For bonus points you can add these distributors as relationships in the relationships editor. Though MB has no way of adding the area restrictions to the distribution
