Classical Style Guide for German [STYLE-148]

Note that op. (with dot), which is not included in your graph, is actually more relevant than op – and unfortunately, a search for Op. (with dot) isn’t possible. As usual, the usefulness of these graphs is diminished by the words/abbreviations having other uses, too. E.g., a significant proportion of the “op.”s is actually “op. cit.”s (meaning “from the work cited before”), formerly often used in references.

It doesn’t make sense to leave it to each editor, though. Either standardize it or say “use what is on the cover”.

I’m OK with “use what’s on the cover” for releases/tracks, and a standard (preferably “op.” for consistency) for works. I’m just not too sure if it’s worth adding the extra difference in the guideline (so, making users remember it’s “op.”, except in German, where it’s as printed)
