Can't tag complete album

In trying to tag this album, https://musicbrainz.org/release/7d0bed45-a9b5-4eaa-bcf0-357d2cd06de6 8 or 9 songs have the dreaded red circle. I have sharing allowed and have tried to tag them as a cluster and as single entries. Do to the large size of the debug log, I am showing the problem with just one of the recordings.

Does the following thread help?

Also does the following help?
https://picard.musicbrainz.org/docs/basics/
Section:
"Matching files & saving
The tracks in the right-hand pane will start out with a musical note icon, and as the tracks become associated with your files the icons will change to one of the following:

a small rectangle ranging from red to green indicates the quality of the match, where red is a bad match and green is a good match
a red error triangle means Picard encountered an error (e.g. permission error), click the file and read the status bar in the bottom of the Picard window to see the error
a green check mark indicates the track is up to date and saved

You can drag whole directories, multiple files or album clusters onto albums and Picard will attempt to match the dragged files to the album. Any track that doesn’t match up well enough, will be added to an “Unmatched Files” sub-folder specific to that album. You can drag files out of this folder and into the right slots in the album to fix up the files that Picard couldn’t get right. "

Do the track times and track names match with your files?

Hello mmirG.

What makes this interesting is that I am trying to tag this album with information from my initial release submission. I am on a windows 10 machine. I used EAC to change the format to flac. I open picard, and click lookup cd. The proper album comes up on the right side. Next I click add folder, cluster, and drag the folder to the right side. Everything displays the green rectangle. When I click save, 8 of my songs display the red circle.

I have also tried to click add files instead of “folder” and drag the songs one at a time to the appropriate song on the right side. I get the same result.

I will now double check the track times and names as you have suggested. I have also tried different tagging scripts and get the same results. Unfortunately I am not yet skilled in interpreting the debug to help me with my diagnosis ergo my submitting this post. I do appreciate your trying to help!

Okay, I have no idea what much of that log says, but I can see a more obvious problem in that log. Your file names are growing too long!

IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u’C:\Users\New Owner\Music[ A ][ Armstrong, Louis ]\Louis Armstrong- The Big Band Recordings 1930 - 1932\Armstrong, Louis & Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra \xb7 [ Armstrong, Louis ] \u2022 Louis Armstrong The Big Band Recordings 1930 - 1932 (1).flac

Tricks to use…

Do your Tagging in a Root Folder. Ideally on a separate hard drive. I have a “D:\RIP” folder I do all my CD ripping and tagging in. Once sorted, I’ll move to my final locations.

Your choice of file and folder naming is making VERY VERY long file names on this release.

Look more carefully at the file and folder names being produced here and consider shrinking some of those extra details you have added in. (I am guessing this could also be your scripts?)

Good guess about my scripts. They are a little descriptive. After your post, I have reviewed my red circle errors. They are all on recordings with “Armstrong, Louis & Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra” whereas the other songs which did not have red circles only had “Armstrong, Louis and His Orchestra”. I must have just crossed the “# of characters permitted in the line” rule. I’ll doctor my scripts and try again.

Thanks IvanDobsky

I slightly changed my scripts a little at a time and found my original file names for 9 recordings were 13 characters too long. Now everything is copacetic!

Thanks to all.

Excellent… if this stuff was too easy, none of us would learn anything.

And I have learnt a new word today “copacetic”.

One other trick is to limit the length of the various entities (e.g.: artist, title, album, etc.) using something like the following (untested code):

$noop(Set a variable to consistently represent the maximum length allowed for an entity in the script)
$set(_MaxLength,30)

$noop(Copy entity to a new variable so as not to change the value used for tagging within the files)
$noop(Note that tags beginning with an underscore will not be written to the files)
$set(_artist,%artist%)

$noop(If entity value is longer than the maximum, truncate)
$if($gt($len(%_artist%),%_MaxLength%),

$noop(First try truncating at word boundary)
$set(_artist,$firstwords(%_artist%,%_MaxLength%))

$noop(If entity value is still longer than the maximum, truncate mid-word)
$if($gt($len(%_artist%),%_MaxLength%),$set(_artist,$truncate(%_artist%,%_MaxLength%)))

$noop(Add dots as ellipsis to the end of the truncated entity)
$set(_artist,%_artist%...))

$noop(You can now use the truncated %_artist% variable when renaming.)

This sort of thing comes in handy especially when renaming classical music where the track titles can be quite lengthy.

Yes Ivan, if it was easy, everyone would do it! I am still struggling with the terminology. I was told by a friend that “plain talk is easy understood”. So for a simple fellow like me, some of the answers I receive are a little difficult to understand.

HI rdswift.

You have taken to picard like a duck to water! Unfortunately, I’m more like a rock. I will try to incorporate your suggestion into my “classical” script. I have lots of classical music saved that I have pulled off my old record albums. It looks like this should help once I get up the courage to try to tag/submit them.

Thanks!

I’d be happy to help where I can. I’ve sent you a private message with my contact information, in case you would rather not do all the back and forth discussion here.
