Even today it is done sometimes, here an example from a German translation with a Hebrew original:

Denn die Seele ist in deiner Hand: original Hebrew title: רצח בדרך בית לחם (English: Bethlehem Road Murder).
I obtained this by searching for Denn die Seele ist in deiner Hand in Google, this gave me the English translation title Bethlehem Road Murder.
I then opened the author’s English Wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batya_Gur and located Bethlehem Road Murder in the bibliography section. I then opened the Hebrew Wiki page for the same author in a new tab https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/בתיה_גור
I translated the Hebrew page into English and located the book. I then swapped back to Hebrew and got the original language title.
Sometimes it is not easy and occasionally it can result in failure. I had that experience with a lot of early Vladimir Nabokov short stories where the original Russian titles are impossible to find.
I enjoy researching this type of information, but I can imagine some people feel the opposite.
After some reflection about adding Japanese transliterated titles, I concluded that if it assists people in locating their edition (or whatever), then I don’t have a problem with adding this information.

I don’t know how I found the original, but your way seems to be faster.
And yes I also like to research information. it’s not a duty, it’s fun.
But when authors are not listed in wiki, it’s very hard to find this info.

OK, I must admit that I’ve no experience with Goodreads. I just remember that it wasn’t helpful when it comes to German only books.
If we treat translations as a unique Work, then what happens when the translation has the same title as the original. For example this edition of Katzenauge: https://bookbrainz.org/edition/496e4705-85f5-4604-aba1-6df6904ed901 which is a German language collection of four stories by Stephen King. Two of the stories use translated titles but two have the original English titles: Quitters, Inc. and Trucks.
If I create a separate Work in this situation then I have to disambiguate by language. It does seem a messy situation.
Yes, I think there is no other way. we have tu use the disambig. field for that.
I agree that it might be the only solution at present.
I just hope I don’t encounter a Work that I need to disambiguate from something and then need to use the field to also differentiate languages. It will look an essay!
Another thing I have noticed is when I add a set of Works to an edition in the order they are listed in the book and save, occasionally they will be displayed in random order.
I find that rather annoying.
I’m convinced, that this will be like in discogs later. You will be able to adjust everything in the edition form, order, aliases and so on. But we need som patience, this will take a while.
OK. But why in random order? I can’t see why they aren’t listed the same way I entered them. It is lunacy as the system is not applying any order that is apparent to me apart from trying to drive me insane.
Well try to change the process. First add the edition and save it. Then create the first work and link it via the relate button in the work form not via the edition form.
And so on. Maybe that will work…
I spent 10 minutes attempting that method by trying all sorts of save combinations and the end result was always a random display. No wonder I have a headache again!
I just realize that the same is happening to my poems. They are sorted in chapters (themes). So I have to try it myself. Sorting a few hundred poems later is not acceptable

Works are currently not sorted, and displayed as returned from the database (which explains the apparent randomness).

The idea is to sort by date of when the work was written or first published, once that information can be added.
I just tried it. Seems to work at least at the moment.
I think this is referring to the author’s page and the list of works there.

I am trying to add Works to an Edition, so that they are in the same order as the contents listing.
Bravo. It did work (I also patted my head and rubbed my stomach for good luck). It is a convoluted method though!
My action was slightly modified as the Edition and Works were all created. I just added the relationship of Edition to each Work, instead of the other way around.
