I wonder why the author is not active in this forum?
He is, just today commented on Something wrong with AcoustID-Server again! - #54 by lukz
How much metadata will be required?
25% or 50% of existing fields?
Will the artist and title be enough?
Any metadata at all. Artist, title, album name, MBID, or even ancient PUID
This has no impact on anything related to MusicBrainz, as far as I can tell. There were only a few very specific use cases for which I allowed this, but it’s just not worth it and makes running the service more costly than it needs to be.
This also means that people start/continue to add metadata like
Track1
Artist1
Title1
Album1
in any language like in this example:
or just
Unkown/Sconosciuto/Unbekannt
in any language?
Would it not be a good idea to stop accepting such useless metadata too?
Filtering out such tags is not that easy. How do you decide that Track01 or Unknown Artist is wrong?
I think that part is handled by the submission count.
Technically, it is very easy. Every submission with “Traccia01” or “Track01” should not be accepted. The very few examples where Artist or Labels have absolutely no fantasy and call their titles that way is IMHO negligible.
I highly doubt that releases like these two random examples are correct:
or
BTW Would be interesting, how many % of the submitted metadata is useless (only containing data like “Track01” or “Unknown Artist”).
Or is this number the same as
the majority of fingerprints in the database is still unidentified
What about audio books which often are labelled like this?
Unknown Artist is also pretty common on cheaper compilations.
All you are looking at with that data is a CD ripping tool that has not done a lookup first. It is pretty common when you are the first person ripping a CD on the day of release for there to be no metadata yet. Chicken and Egg scenario has you ripping tracks to feed them to Picard to tag and then update.
Even audiobooks needs ARTIST or ALBUM metadata. If all of them are “unknown” or “Unbekannter Künstler” and the TITLE is “TrackNN” the metadata is useless.
I don’t think that “Unknown Artist” helps to improve my collection in any way. And it also not helps to combine the fingerprint with the proper/matching recording on MB. Such entries only fill the AcoustID database with data that will never help.
This change concerns AcoustIDs like this:
https://acoustid.org/track/2d5923f8-e672-43ec-b2b2-ed6baf88cb68
It will stop accepting fingerprints with no metadata at all, but even “Unknown” or “Track01” will be still considered metadata, so accepted.
Trying to detect this useless metadata is a good idea and I might try to do a script to estimate what part of the DB it would impact, but that’s not planned for now.
