Which composer(s) to credit

Here’s a fun one.

This release has a single movement from a sonata. The sonata is kind of unique, because the movements were written by different composers. Albert Dietrich wrote the 1st movement, Schumann wrote the 2nd and 4th, and Brahms the 3rd.

This release only includes the 3rd movement (Brahms), but credits all three composers (plus an arranger). Should I also credit all three composers in the Track Artist?

I have edited the release crediting only Brahms on the track, plus a lot of other CSG edits. If the consensus is that all 3 composers should be credited, I’ll make that adjustment after all these edits apply.

The precedent in most of the many other recordings of this work appears to be to credit just Brahms as the track artist. Crediting all three would be out of step.

(Perhaps this is the way rules can get made in the absence of guiding principle?)

Just Brahms sounds right to me too. Imagine if we credited every composer on each part of the Diabelli variations!

My only hesitation is that the cover art explicitly mentions the other composers.

We should fix mistakes.
Crediting to other artists was a mistake, because they (label) didn’t or couldn’t separate the movement credits in their mind (they didn’t know) or system.

To me, it doesn’t read as a mistake or oversight. In fact, it seems like the opposite.

(Note that I voted yes on only crediting Brahms.)

Yeah, I wouldn’t have thought of it as a mistake. It’s a pretty unique situation to have a single work with movements by different composers.

But I lean toward leaving it as just Brahms.

I see no mistake here.

All three composers should be credited as release artists, but only the correct one as track artist for each movement.

No, Dietrich shouldn’t be credited as a release artist. He isn’t on the cover.

Only the Brahms movement appears on this release. The Schumann and Dietrich movements aren’t here.
