Hi all! I recently discovered MusicBrainz, Picard, and the rest of the MetaBrainz ecosystem. In my day job I provide music publishing administration for musical artists, labels, songwriters and publishers. (In short my job is to register copyrighted content in various databases so that the rightful copyright owners can collect their rightful royalties.)
I would like to find tools and workflows that can help me (and other music admins) complete our work more efficiently and accurately. Unfortunately, the music industry has a long history of terribly disorganized and inaccurate data, which means that it is very difficult for creatives to reap the benefits of their hard work.
My question is:
- Does anyone have experience in music publishing administration, and do you have recommendations for helpful tools and workflows?
- Do you know of pitfalls that I should avoid?
Here are some of the problems Iām trying to solve:
- Finding missing data: I need a wide variety of data including song titles, ISRC, ISWC, IPI numbers. I need data for works, and recordings, and releases. These are strewn across so many sources.
- Reconciling data: Many data sources are inaccurate. I need to check across multiple sources for inconsistencies.
- Connecting works (compositions) to recordings and releases
