Searching Based on Instrument and Genre

Can MusicBrainz search based on Genre and Instrument? An example I want to query on all Smooth Jazz and Trumpet players.

I’m not a search expert and was kind of surprised to find that this (seems like it) works:

On the Advanced search page check ‘Indexed search with advanced query syntax’ and set the type to ‘Artist’ in the dropdown box.

Then you can search for:

instrument:trumpet AND tag:jazz

This query seems to give you any artist with the tag ‘jazz’ that also has a relationship with the ‘trumpet’ attribute.

Of course results will vary depending on the quality of MB data.

Just to clarify what’s happening above: instrument: is not a real field, so trumpet AND tag:jazz will give you mostly the same results. :slightly_smiling_face: With the advanced search, any terms that aren’t associated with a real field will just search the artist name, sort name, aliases, and disambiguation comment (which is why many results there have “trumpet” in the comment). Unfortunately there is no way to actually search based on the relationships themselves at the moment.
