Because when this was added it was added without track length. Maybe the editor didn’t know, or just didn’t enter. But there is a disc ID attached and duration can be set via disc ID. You can do this on Log in - MusicBrainz .

You just showed me a log where the fingerprint of “Stray Cat Blues” gave no results. So this can’t be the result of “Scan”, unless it was a different “Stray Cat Blues” recording in the screenshot. The screenshot can be the result of “Lookup” or it could be manually dragged file.

So when you use “Scan” on a file Picard calculates an acoustic fingerprint from the file’s audio. It then sends this fingerprint together with the duration to the AcoustID server, which looks up its database for existing fingerprints that are reasonable similar to be considered identical. Those fingerprints are grouped under what is called the AcoustID

If it finds some the AcoustID server returns a list of matching AcoustIDs together with details about MusicBrainz recordings linked to this AcoustID.

In this case the request itself was successful but AcoustID returns an empty list, indicating that there are no reasonable similar fingerprints yet in its database.

So either no similar fingerprint was ever submitted or there have been but there was some issue processing this submission on the AcoustID side.

Just as explanation: The fingerprint icon indicates, that Picard has calculated the acoustic fingerprint. This is a purely local action. It shows an icon because the fingerprint itself as a pretty long and awkward string (*) that does not tell much for itself. If you look at the fingerprint icons on the right panel (for matched files) they might show up red. A red fingerprint icon indicates a fingerprint that can be submitted (the “Submit AcoustIDs” button will light up in this case as well). After submission the icon turns gray again.

Lookup does not make use of fingerprinting at all. It doesn’t matter if there are any AcoustIDs and whether and to which recordings they are linked. Lookup solely looks at the metadata, and in this specific case it’s only title, length and track number it can use. Essentially it will pick one of Search results - MusicBrainz because those are closest (all same title, very similar length). The MB search server also assigns a search score based on how well the search term match. But again all three will have the same score.

The one from Hoss gets used because it shows up first (for no particular reason, for the given search terms it is just as valid as the other results and one has to be first).

I made a bit more testing with your specific fingerprint and did some manual webservice lookups against AcoustID. Actually the acoustic data matches the one from Track "419210c2-28a4-4409-bced-c8e4741b3d15" | AcoustID

But the reason why it does not match is the length difference. The fingerprint there was submitted for a song length of 4:37, while your file has 4:23. This is more than the 7 second difference AcoustID allows for a match.

At this time I don’t know whether submitting the fingerprint with your duration will heal the situation or not.
