Performance name guidelines and non-performing artists

I have a question that Style / Artist - MusicBrainz does not explicitly address, and the impression that, as a consequence, editing practices vary. (I searched for similar discussions, but I cannot see that this has been discussed directly.)

For artists who are primarily non-performers (e.g. songwriters) and use multiple “pen names”, is there a preference between using aliases (= one artist entry, with the artist name typically matching the most commonly used credit) vs. separate artist entries?

And if there is a preference one way or another, could we codify it?

The way I see it the preference comes down to volume. If they use an alias on a small number of tracks, then just an alias. If they have full on separate personalities and different releases with that name on then the become separate artists with “performs as” relationships.

If they release drum and bass as one name, and opera as a different name then I would tend to keep them separated and link them with “performs as”.

If they just change their name every few years then I’d keep it as a single name with aliases.
