@Freso

Making sure you're not a bot!

@Freso

I updated Discourse again and went and deleted some spam editors on MB.
I helped with some blog posts (Gentlecat’s AB update and the GSoC student ones).
I also got my flight tickets for MB Summit 16 (and for my moving to Barcelona too)…
And I was around and about.

Support. More support. Not much more because I’ve been in Spain with the family
The general conclusions of the vocals + instruments thing from last week are “we want it in theory but it might need discussing and rethinking the UI”
Maybe something to talk about at the summit? We’ll see

@bitmap

about 75% done updating dockerfiles to use consul-template instead of m4
fixing services so they reload properly on HUP
worked on creating a container for static files which we discussed a bit in here last week
prevents some problems with deploying updated images
working out issues as they come up

@zas

Making sure you're not a bot!

@zas

mainly consolidated “fix” for web service abusers, updated letsencrypt certs (and certbot, still something to improve), i fixed few broken stats (and grafana graphs)
i evaluated Kong, running tests and benchmarks, it is a micro service frontend
basically it handled auth, rate limiting etc …
the tool is great, and works well, but not for us (yet)
because it’s json-only, and patch for multiple upstreams (load balancing) isn’t ready yet (should be in next release)
i will keep an eye on this, but we have to discuss web service future before
i discussed a lot with bitmap, about dockerization etc…
plus usual maintenance & supervision
we have few certs expiring soon (beginning of september), i’m thinking about moving to LE, but it doesn’t support wildcard certs
so the move is possible but requires a bit more work
as each sub domain has to be handled separately
i’ll tell more on this next week

@Rob

@LordSputnik

This week I worked on the new editing interface for BookBrainz.
I’ve been working on the alias editor modal, which appears when editors click a button to add more than one alias/name to an entity.
This replaces the current behaviour of asking editors to enter all aliases on one page, hiding unnecessary complexity.
I set up LetsEncrypt certificate renewal for test.bookbrainz.org, after I saw zas mention autorenwal in IRC.
I also reviewed and merged the last four of QuoraUK’s GSoC PRs, bringing a number of new achievements and interface changes to the BB achievement system.
And I reviewed QuoraUK’s blog post a couple of times and made some suggestions.

@kartikgupta0909

did nothing last week as i needed the branches to be merged and alastair was on vacation. Will modify the client code to use the API if the branches get merged this week.

GSoC Final Evaluations

Making sure you're not a bot!

@Freso

Time is almost out for the students to submit their final evaluations: 4 students have submitted and we have one straggler, armalcolite. But his blog post will be published at 8 AM UTC tomorrow, so he can submit it after that.
After their deadline, final evaluations open up for the mentors to submit before the 29th at 7 PM UTC (that is, before the meeting next week).
Again, not much to discuss, just a heads up. We’ll talk aftermath of GSoC soon.

MB Summit 16

Making sure you're not a bot!

@Freso

So, as ruaok noted last week, the MetaBrainz team is really crazy busy trying to get ready to move to NewHost, and not a lot of people outside of Barcelona have committed (ie., bought transportation tickets) to going yet either (chirlu, zas, and myself are the only ones), so ruaok proposed to cancel it - or possibly “turn it into a NewHost hacking weekend”.
What are people’s thoughts?

@Rob was fine with having it become a “hack weekend”, as long as he did not have to do any of the arranging, so @Freso stepped up to take care of the logistical issues and running the event. 4 people are likely to be coming, outside of the people already in Barcelona: @Freso, @Zas, @Bitmap, and @chirlu.

We may or may not reach out to Google to help fund the event.

Splitting Discourse’s MB category

Making sure you're not a bot!

@Freso

There is both a lot of technical discussion and a lot of more “user(/editor) oriented” discussion currently happening in the MusicBrainz category on Discourse. I have been thinking about making one or more subcategories for a while, and now other people have started to ask for it too, so I guess it’s due time.

But should it be an “editor” (or “user”) sub-category, or a “development”/“technical” one? Or both? A category will, by default, show topics of all sub-categories, so going to /c/musicbrainz will still show everything, so making two subcategories would allow people to visit the one they care about. It is also possible to use /c/musicbrainz/none to only display topics directly in the MusicBrainz category, so that may be the option for those who do not care about the contents of sub-categories.

After some discussion back and forth, the meeting decided to create /c/musicbrainz/devel and evaluate later if we should also create a user/editor (ie., non-“technical”) sub-category.
