NOTE
This is not a big deal and I do not expect anything to be done about it. This post is like 99% a lighthearted vent and 1% a hope it’ll get seen by whoever keeps adding these tags.
I recently switched music players due to some frustrations with my previous client’s bug reporting policy[1], and it comes with a nice auto-playlist generator. You can filter by many different types of metadata including genres, which is awesome, except that my genre tags come from MusicBrainz and someone out there has some very strange ideas about what belongs in one of my favorite genres.
You see, I have terrible musical taste and love me some noise and noise adjacent stuffs. If the cover’s got one of these on it, I will play it until I’m sick of it! So with my sweet new tool, I created a playlist with these genre tags: GrindcorePowerviolenceHardcore Punk[2]Queercoreemoviolence. Unfortunately for me, someone thinks all punk is Hardcore Punk. Not sure how you hear Pennywise or The Bouncing Souls[3] and think hardcore but someone did, a whole bunch. I’m curious what they consider pop-punk. Hardcore isn’t a super clear genre and contains a plethora of sub-genres, but pop-punk bands certainly don’t belong there.
Again, not a big deal. I honestly find it kinda funny. A little frustrating but nothing a few tweaks in Picard can’t fix.
Please don’t ask people to go to Discord for support for your open source programs. It’s bad enough we still use GitHub. ↩︎
this one’s the problem child but catches many of those tasty ear rupturing sounds I’m looking for ↩︎
they were also tagged as pop rock… This one does kinda piss me off actually ↩︎
LOL, sorry to hear about your woes, but I’d like to know what the music player is that can do this, then I can come back here and moan about the wrong sort of metal…
A lot of media centres like KODI, Navidrome, Feishin do this. Now we can make databases of our ripped music it is getting easier to find different front ends to filter our collections as we need. MB tagging is great for releasing access into music in many ways. And so many different genres help that filtering.
I’m waiting for new metal tags so I can sift Lead (heavy metal) from Aluminium (soft metal)
That’s fine, honestly. You could have went with some shit like Screwdriver with the same logic, then I’d be pissed. lol Though some of the bands under this genre aren’t much better than those turds.
Can’t remember. I just vote them the hell down… and then click the tag and vote on some of the other stuff they are making their weird opinion votes on.
The trouble is when something appears with just one vote on it. You know it is some childish idiot with an opinion.
I spot them by scrolling through the tags I see in my media centre. I’m often checking them over due to the weird typos ( i.e. Drum n Bass / Drum & Bass / Drum and Bass )
This is one of the times I want to learn how to write a script so I can blast it back at these people. They clearly use scripts to add these tags, so I want a script to down vote their tag in bulk
hmmm… I’ve always wanted to learn JavaScript. I’ll let you know if anything comes of it. No promises, I can write a bash script but that’s about as deep as my programming skills go. But I’ll see what I can do.
I would also like to have this, both for what you are looking for and for the ability to remove RAC from all the nazi scum bands and replace it with something more identifiable.
Hey @aerozol do you think it’d be possible for that tagging script of yours to send down-votes as well? No sense in reinventing the wheel and adding another user-script if it can be implemented in an already existing one.
@aerozol nvm [-_-] shoulda taken more time to investigate before asking that, I apologies. “Withdraw votes” read as taking back the votes I’d submitted, it only just dawned on me to try it.
I was too busy to look into this earlier sorry, but in short: The ‘Withdraw votes’ function is badly explained and badly tested!
Only being able to undo your own mass-tags was properly tested, as I was concerned with the script potentially allowing you to mass-break but not mass-fix/undo. Removing other peoples votes, when you have none of your own, was something of a bonus.
When I said this it was partially as a joke. It was not about removing my vote. It was about disagreeing with a bad scripted tag made by others. Having a script to remove it would be dangerous as it could lead to arguments.
But the point I was trying to make is people adding these bogus items are doing it with scripts without any limits. And they do it anonymously. Do we really need tags that say “Estados Unidos” and “USA” on every release of an american band? So much tag data is not relevant to the genres. Countries should not be in tags.
Ones that annoy my OCD are where you see the same genre named in a different way. (Can’t remember an example - something like Drum n Bass / Drum and Bass / D n B )
If we are having a democratic voting system for genre tags, and allow one side to put in mass votes by script, then a script to mass vote a “no” against that tag seems balanced. An equal use of tools.
Personal tags would be so useful and likely help some of the above mess. A lot of the stuff I vote down is clearly for personal use. (Like the person who is tagging all their CDs with the date they bought them… )
Folded ramblings regarding LLMs. Feel free to read later or skip entirely.
Pretty sure all of MetaBrainz is being maintained by quite a bit of LLM generated code now tbh. I just kind of assumed everyone was aware that many of the userscripts are being maintained and/or written entirely by LLMs. As someone who’s pretty heavily against these things for how they’re being used, I think we also need to recognize their legitimate uses. They aren’t going anywhere and we have to figure out how we can use them for our benefit. Because the one’s who run these have never and will never have our interest in mind. I suggest self-hosting it if at all possible. Just make sure it doesn’t send any data out and not only are you no longer adding to the server issues, but you aren’t feeding the “Big-M” machine more data to keep out of the hands of The People.
I can probably help with that last part, I’m sure I can work out how to add a tooltip to JavaScript. Probably won’t be able to get to it for the next day or so though. Got an infection in an months old hand injury I should have gotten stitches for but didn’t and so I’ll be going to the ER tomorrow to deal with that. Maybe I’ll bring my laptop along and try to work it out there.
As for the testing, I saw mention of a MusicBrainz playground server or something like that the other day. Do y’all know if that’s a hosted thing or if I’d have to spin up my own server? Either way I can do that.
Tried to find a proper way to do this but couldn’t. Ugh…I hate BB Code. ↩︎
Oh, I understood that. What’s being discussed is that we can in fact already down vote via the script mentioned above. Because of the way the button is worded it seems to imply that what you’d be doing is removing your own vote, but it downvotes any tag you add into the tag search box when you tick the “withdraw votes” box.
