I stumbled upon the release Twenty by Voces8. It features classical music, no doubt. The track artists are all attributed to Voces8, yet Style / Classical / Track Artist is still active, right?
Upon confirmation, I’ll update the release so that track artist is the composer.
(btw, this release this release seems even uglier )
It seems reasonable to call it a classical album, but I see at least 9 or 10 tracks that I would call “classical crossover” (“Vincent,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” “Caledonia,” etc.)
I’m not sure how I would go with this one. Does the publisher/label mention a genre anywhere?
On a similar track, how does the artist describe themselves? E.g., https://www.bondquartet.com/biography (probably not classical) seems to mostly talk about the group and its members and says things like “genuinely genre-defying act” but Biography | Yo-Yo Ma (often classical) says “new or familiar works” in the second sentence. I feel like classical artists often talk about experience with an instrument and the works/composers a lot more than non-classical artists.
The 2023 Grammy-nominated British vocal ensemble VOCES8 is the world’s top-streaming classical vocal group and proud to inspire people through music and share the joy of singing. Touring globally, the group performs an extensive repertory both in its a cappella concerts and in collaborations with leading musicians, orchestras, conductors and soloists. Versatility and a celebration of diverse musical expression are central to the ensemble’s performance and education ethos which is shared both online and in person.
I have edited a few of their more classical releases in the past and treated them as classical. They definitely straddle the line, though.
Voces8’s website doesn’t seem to call out any genres. Their Wikipedia entry lists “genre” as “a capella music.” With such a varied repertoire, it’s probably best to go case-by-case for each album. But that doesn’t help much.
