"Labels" for phonographic copyright

Hi, a question to which I couldn’t find the answer by searching:

I want to add phonographic copyright to this release: https://musicbrainz.org/release/96230050-857e-4573-8368-57425ffc8e72

On the disc it says (P) Olympia 1994
Olympia is the label Olympia - MusicBrainz
I have seen that in cases where the label holds the copyright, there is a different “label” set up for this…
e.g. Sanctuary Classics - MusicBrainz & Sanctuary Records Group Ltd. - MusicBrainz

So, before I do anything - can I please check:
a) Do I have to create another label for Olympia for phonographic copyright?
b) Are there any guidelines for how to do this?

Thanks!

Hi,
what’s printed on this disc is
OLYMPIA
℗ 1994
© 1994
There’s no name after the copyright symbols and OLYMPIA might be meant as the label. The rights holder would be (more likely) the company name.¹

In general, if it’s a smaller record label (not many releases), I don’t create a separate MB label for the imprint and the company and if it’s printed differently for use as label and rights holder (Olympia vs. Olympia Compact Discs Ltd. for example), I would use the existing MB label with credited as.

¹) the format for a copyright notice is: ℗ {year} {rights holder} ←if there’s no rights holder in this place, it’s not specified

OK thank you, that is very clear!

May I ask a further question about this?

I’m doing the same for this album (back cover here) Release “Violin Sonatas & Piano Suites” by Heitor Villa-Lobos; Alfred Heller, Jue Yao - Cover art - MusicBrainz
℗ 1990 ETCETERA RECORDS B.V.
© 1990 ETCETERA RECORDS B.V.
This is the label Etcetera - MusicBrainz
There is an Etcetera Records B.V. already on Musicbrainz Etcetera Records B.V. - MusicBrainz BUT it is a “label” label rather than a “company” with releases attached. It even says the type is “original production”

They have different Discogs pages which say that Etcetera used to be owned by Etcetera Records B.V.
Both have several hundred releases on Discogs.
Albums from both companies seem to be listed here: https://www.etcetera-records.com/

So, should I create a second Etcetera Records B.V. for the phonographic copyright?
Thanks!

On MB, the only way to store companies are as labels. So, the release label is what the imprint (the logo) is. So, the release label is just Etcetera. Discogs can be wrong. No, don’t create a new label, just use the existing Etcetera Records B.V. for the phonographic copyright. Labels can be used for more than one thing. So, a copyright can be held by the parent company (and a lot of times is).

Ah OK, so the ones which say “do not use for releases” are exceptions, rather than the standard?
Thank you!

What the “do not use for releases” means is just not to use it as the release label on release events. The imprint in other words. For the main label on the release you want the imprint. Everything else is basically just as it’s printed on the release. So, in this instance do not use Etcetera Records B.V. as the imprint or release label. It’s ok to use it if it’s printed on the release for (c) (p), manufacturing, distribution, etc. for relationships.
