Thomas Dutronc covers some old French songs that have also been adapted into English. With a first part covering the French version and a second the English part or vice versa.
What type of relationship with the original work is most appropriate? cover for the two version, partial cover for the two version, something else?

so are there recordings of all three versions? i.e. some of the French, some of the English, and the Thomas Dutronc recording with both?
if so, that sounds pretty similar to Adeste fideles by Bing Crosby, which combines the common English version with the original Latin (first in Latin, then in English). this is entered as a seperate work linked to both original works (the exact relationships are up to you, depending on how the song is written)
if the English lyrics are new to this version, you could link it as a translated version of the French song (with the language set as English and French)

Why partial?
He does not sing all verses of each version?
Recordings are covers of French works and covers of English works.
That makes 2 recording-work relationships per recording, not 3.
You can order the relationships, if applicable.
Check partial when all verses and choruses are not sung, indeed.
Check medley if there is a seamless or musical bridge transition between both versions, which I guess it is.

yeah, that’s fair. I’d probably only create a new work if there’s multiple performances of the particular arrangement. like, if other artists perform it or if the original artist performs it live with some frequency
So i checked for “Beyond the sea/La mer” and the english part is missing the two last verses and the french part don’t repeat the four verses like in the original song.
I will check for the other titles but given the length of the songs it seems there must have been some cuts.

huh, I didn’t know Beyond the Sea was originally in French…
yeah, the English version is significant enough to have its own work, so I’d probably go with a medley. there’s two ways you can handle this:
- connect both works to the recording with the Medley attribute selected
- connect both works to another work with medley relationships, and connect that work to the recording
I’d use 1 if this is a one-off performance, or 2 if there’s several performances of this particular arrangement
A different lyrics song will always be a new work, even if same language, or even if it is translated word by word.
It does not need to be significant enough, whatever that means.

this case has:
- the original work (in French)
- the translated work (in English)
- the multilingual medley in question (in English and French, whether as a seperate work or not)
as opposed to
- the original work (in French)
- a partially translated work (in French and English)

So, for now, i opted for the medley version. No new work. Feel free to change that.
