How to Handle Holy Texts

What do you think the proper way to handle holy texts is? Some are considered to be divinely passed to humanity like the Vedas, some have legendary authorship that is rejected by scholars like the Gospel of Thomas, some texts have contradicting authors depending on the tradition, etc.

Also worth thinking about are psudepigrapha like Pseudo-Dionysius and Pseudo-Orpheus.

This applies also to all kinds of myths, legends, fairy tales etc. I’ve not the slightest idea how to handle these “stories”. There are more variables than constants. This will be very difficult.
