Simple question with hopefully a simple answer 
If a release has a track which is an excerpt from a recording on another release, should I just link it to the original recording or is there a way of showing that it is only a part of the original?
Nope! A recording in MB should be the same and an excerpt is not the same 
I would use the edit relationship.
