This is an on-and-off issue I’ve been having for a while: sometimes edit pages take forever to load, showing the spinning wheel with “loading”.
I’ve just tried it and the problem shows on Firefox Nightly (normal browsing) and on Edge while using the musicbrainz.org website, even with all the extensions disabled (which also disables the scripts). The issue doesn’t appear when using musicbrainz.eu, or the beta website, or a private browsing session in Firefox. The only stuff that seems to get blocked is a call to sentry.io.
Any ideas?
Edit: And now it’s not working on the beta or eu website anymore…
You’re not flagged as a bot, all of us have these loading pages.
Especially when opening links in new tabs, without referrer.
When we browse MB “normally”, with referrer (previous page in history), browsing history, and everything, it should not re-happen for a while.
To give more details: The massive amount of traffic caused by the AI scraper bots is the cause why we all experience slow loading times and have to deal with those checks on loading (which are an attempt to keep the bots from overloading the site completely).
I’d prefer to build lots more data centers to drive down the cost of compute services, so orgs like MetaBrainz can serve more traffic with the same budget, making bots a non-issue. Looking mid- and long-term, infrastructure investment should increase efficiency and bring down prices, particularly once the capex is recovered.
I look at technology as a glass-half-full: I see more knowledge and communication is a good thing. The occasional downsides make headlines due to outrage being profitable in the “attention economy”, but when looking at the effects of technology holistically, I think it’s a net benefit for society. I think as a society that we’ve gotten so used to carrying what is in effect a whole public library in our pockets that we can forget how wonderful that is!
With that thing in their pocket, 98% people will rather waste hours a day, scrolling hundreds of 10 second stupid videos and read/watch advertising on “social” networks, hours a day, and then buy more useless junk.
Technology sucks.
I don’t see a “half empty cup” in the metro everyday, 98% is more than half. Or ok, maybe 75%.
Here in the states the vast majority of new data center construction is for AI, not for services like AWS. PJM the major Transmission line provider on the east coast is putting in huge 750KVA lines that the rate payers (regular household consumers) are having to pay for but 75% of the electricity load is going to the new AI data centers. These new data centers also consume vast quantities of water. Before retiring 10 years ago my field was in that business, mostly climate supercomputers. I can tell you this, the cost of your computing has been driven down about as low as it can get, I suspect the price you will pay will only go up in the future, not down.
