Crediting a trio with instruments

I’m editing a classical release which includes performances by a named trio. The trio consists of a piano, violin, and flute. So it isn’t a “string trio,” or a “piano trio,” which are the only such options for the Instrument field.

I wonder if this is an appropriate way to credit the trio and name the instruments. I’m asking because I’ve never seen an example where this was done, but it seems natural:

I will also add the individual players of those instruments in their own relationships.

I would usually leave it at unspecified instruments, but I am lazy. This looks good to me!

Yeah, but sometimes leaving something less precise just sticks in my throat.

This particular release is pretty messed up, so I’m making a project out of it.

Yeah, that release looks pretty bad.

Apparently. I won’t be changing those, unfortunately, because I haven’t found any reference to this release anywhere else.

There are some other releases that seem to be from the same series. Perhaps there is overlap in the recordings? Often these discount classical labels recycle recordings.

E.g. Telemann Trio, Orchestra Gli Armonici, European Archive, Antonio Lucio Vivaldi - Relaxical Vol. 21 C1 - Relax with Antonio Lucio Vivaldi - Beautifully Relaxing Classical Music – 2+ Hours Music – Cello Sonata, Concerto, Six Flutes, Violin, Harpsichord, Orchestra, Concertos - 2 CD - Amazon.com Music seems to have the same first work.

I think it would be fair to delete the “European Archive” credits and set the artist on those recordings to unknown. Or merge “European Archive” into [unknown].

I’ll take a look at that a little later. Thanks.

Ugh. I don’t quite know what to do with disc 11, track 6.

Concerto Grossi Op.1 by Antonio Vivaldialso byPietro Antonio LocatellifromEuropean Archive (12:41)

Vivaldi’s op. 1 is sonatas.
Locatelli’s op. 1 is twelve concerto grossi, but I have no clue which one is on this release. And I can’t figure out why they have Vivaldi’s name in there. I may leave that one alone.

Back on topic… to answer your original question, that seems perfectly logical to me. The trio is one “group”, and that entity plays those three instruments. Same as if a single person plays two instruments on a track.

Problem is, where do you draw the line. Would you add the instruments to the orchestra when you credit it?

I suppose you could, if you wanted to. However, in this instance, I count laziness as a valid parameter in decision-making.

I would guess Locatelli since the name matches better and @Snappawapa went out of their way to add Locatelli to just that one track. Asking on https://musicbrainz.org/edit/103428007 might get you a more definitive answer

Tracks 8 and 9 on the same medium have similar contractions. The track artist is Vivaldi, but the track names contain “BWV”.
