I have a feeling I’m missing something obvious but…when I’m adding performer relationships to a release (like https://musicbrainz.org/release/f13e0ed3-465c-4481-8655-a033d52d4169 ), and I search for a name (like say Jeffrey “Tain” Watts). On this CD he’s credited as Jeff Watts; it seems like I should enter that in the “credited as” field, but that field is greyed out and filled in with the canonical name. Is there something I need to do to enable this?

Click in the field and type the correct “credited as” name.
I think the greyed out is meant to be signalling that there is no current “credited as” name and that the canonical name will be displayed.

Thank you - it was something obvious. 
I kept trying to select and erase the grayed-out text instead of just typing!
