Just to illustrate how variable these terms are (taken from 3 different sources):
“There are general guidelines for each literary category: Short stories range anywhere from 1,500 to 30,000 words; Novellas run from 30,000 to 50,000; Novels range from 55,000 to 300,000 words.”
“A short story is anything up to about 7500 words (sometimes 10,000), with higher word counts typically called novelettes, and short novels called novellas.”
“• Under 1000: Flash fiction, or “short short” stories
• 1,000-7,500: Short story
• 7,500-20,000: Novelette
• 20,000-50,000: Novella
• Over 50,000: Novel”
The Dead by James Joyce has a word count of 15,952 words, so take your pick (but you can’t have novelette as that is not a menu option)!
