Artist Credit in “X from Y” form

Hi,

I am trying to vote on edit Edit #151396672 - MusicBrainz, but I can’t decide whether the edit is good or bad. The issue is on the second artist:

AKINO from bless4

My question is “from bless4” should be part of the artist credit, should be some kind of join phrase ?

The guidelines Style / Artist Credits - MusicBrainz did not help me.

Definitely should not be a join phrase here as bless4 was not involved. If you used a join phrase to add bless4 then this would appear on their artist page and they were not involved.

Looking at your edit I would have left this as it was. The artist is AKINO. Any other description of them is really not part of their name. Though I don’t think what you did was exactly incorrect.

A join phrase is what it was before. Theartist name was AKINO, with a following join phrase of " from bless4".

I would have kept the join phrase approach really. The artist name is AKINO, “from bless 4” a further description.

But yes, one can argue either way, though.

There is still a join phrase though, it’s just blank and they added one of AKINO’s aliases as the joined artist. “AKINO from bless4” is one of their aliases {–_–}. This is like a whole line of screw ups that just keep compounding, lol.

            {
               "artist" : {
                  "id" : 295692,
                  "name" : "AKINO"
               },
               "join_phrase" : "",
               "name" : "AKINO from bless4"
            }
         ]
      }
   },

Either way, both the original and the new edit are incorrect. I recommended they cancel it and voted no but as I mentioned in my edit note, this artist’s whole discog is riddled with this same or similar problems, so it all needs to be fixed anyway. Just hope my explanation was good enough to clarify why it was incorrect.

I wonder what the system does when you join an artist’s alias to the same artist… I’m tempted to change my vote to a yes to find out, lol

Sorry, but I don’t get what you mean. So you say both the artist credited as “AKINO from bless4” (with no join phrase) as well as credited as “AKINO” followed by a join phrase " from bless4" are incorrect.

So what is the third correct variation?

I think I misunderstood how the JSON data is parsed. I had assumed that the inclusion of the join_phrase key meant it was included but after looking at some other edits I see I was mistaken. I thought the editor had just added a blank join phrase and added “bless4” as a joined artist.

Ok, maybe I need some help understanding now. This is what I’m thinking based on what I described above. Is the artist just going to be labeled as “bless4” now?

Edit: Nope, nevermind. The way the JSON is laid out has me all turned around with the new edit being on the top. but now it looks to me like the editor may have done the correct thing. “AKINO from bless4” will be the Artist Credit as and that’s literally what the credit is on the release.

I see, thanks for clarifying. Yes, I think the edit is changing the way you consider it right. The full “AKINO from blessed4” is the new artist credit.

The artist credits from the JSON are formatted in a way that for each entry the name and join phrase are concatenated (with the artist name usually turned into a link to the artist).

Well, now a feel like a jerk because it looks like they cancelled it based on my suggestion. That artist really does need to be cleaned up though. Maybe I’ll make up for it by working on that today.

Thanks you for your good arguments and discussion.

I am now in favor of the full “AKINO from bless4” version of the artist credit.

“from bless4” is a description of the artist, especially useful here because of the other artist AKINO arai; it is not something between two artists. From a grammatical view, I can view “AKINO from bless4” as a phrasal noun that represent the artist.
