They are promotional because they’re made available to their subscribers before being released to the public, I think usually a few months beforehand.

Noisia used to release promos through their Patreon as well.

so basically any release of a single (that later would be included in album) can be marked as promo with this discripton.
and Noisia doesn’t even falls under “give-away release” bc it requaires payed subscription.

Digital promotional releases definitely exist.

Yes, bc nobody voted against that, Xythium just put “old promo” in the descripton. And there is basically no way to verify official or promo status of (for example) that Anmon release
let’s say i will make an edit of this release and mark it as official, there is no way to be shure who is right.

in my edits i was I was guided by text of the guidelines, and distinct features of physical promo releases which distinguishes an official release from a promo

There should be a way to differentiate digital official releases from digital promo releases. In my eyes distinctive features of physycal promo releases are applicable to digital ones.

the wording of this guideline has been confusing for many users (including myself early on), but this has not been the community consensus or general practice. I’ve actually started a discussion on changing the wording here to make it clearer (as well as some of the other points you’ve raised here)

these do fall under the second use case, namely it’s “a release intended to promote an upcoming official release”, such as The Resonance I, which was released a few days early on Patreon

This description is too general, any single and/or EP included in the album release fits this description. the point of this discussion was to separate the promo release from the official one

this is also why I’m looking to clarify the distinction between “promoting a different release” is not promotional and “promoting a similar release, from the same release group” is

From my point of view, there are established distinct features of physical promo releases that can be applied to digital releases without the need for speculation.

I’m not sure promo is correct for YUKRU and Noisia/VISION but i think its better than official. Ideally there’d be something inbetween? Like official exclusive or something, beatport, tidal & bandcamp timed-exclusives could be used for that as well.

I’m not really sure what kind of edit notes to put for YUKRU releases. They send an email with a link to a private inflyteapp.com page. For newer YUKRU promos i try to put more information in the relationships
